Could Be a Drawing of a Bear

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

#17387 Good climbers, black bear cubs often go up trees when threatened. Every other winter females give birth to 1 or 2 cubs – possibly even 5 – weighing only about 8 ounces and nearly hairless. Cubs do not leave their den until they are 2 months old and weigh 5 pounds. They usually stay with their protective mothers for 18 months.

Gather the Bones

CARD IMAGE:

San Fernando Cathedral
Original Parish Church of San Antonio

"The old cathedral" has watched over the city through 200 years if struggle and progress. During the siege of the Alamo it was held by Santa Anna, and his flag flew from its towers. From these same towers had flown Texas flags of Victory a short time before. Tradition says that soon after the fall of the Alamo, an influential Mexican whose sympathies were with the Texans, gathered together what bones of the heroes he could find, and buried them secretly under the altar of San Fernando. The church has been kept in perfect repair and is in daily constant use.

CARD IMAGE:

The Tyger

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Athens of the South

CARD IMAGE:

The Parthenon - Nashville, Tennessee

The Parthenon in Nashville was created for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in 1897 and today stands as the centerpiece of Centennial Park. Nashville's Parthenon is a full-scale replica of the original in Athens, as it looked upon completion in 438 B.C. The building reinforces Nashville's nickname, "Athens of the South," and includes a re-creation of the Athena Parthenos statue, which stands 41' 10" tall.

Dear Lynn,

Good to hear from you electronically. Our recent trip took us right to this view.

Dear Scott & Joan,

Crowded roads, but worth the effort & expense to see. Visited Nashville & Frankfort, Ky., as well. Also pleasant, for different reasons.

Chief Henry

CARD IMAGE:

"Chief Henry" of the Cherokee Indians

"Chief Henry" a Cherokee is one of the most photographed Indians in the world and truly a visitor's delight. About 20,000 Cherokee Indians lived in North Carolina when the White Man settled America.

Dear Gail,

Sadly, I've read that "Chief Henry" died last year. But when we visited Cherokee, NC, recently, "Chief Syd" was posing for pics dressed much like this.

Candle Writing

CARD IMAGE:

Mammoth Cave National Park

#17102 "Register Hall" in "Gothic Avenue," is an extreme example of nineteenth-century visitor impact. By the 1880s candle writing was frowned upon, but visitors soon found another way of "leaving their mark." Hundreds of Monuments, like the "Kentucky Monument," pictured, were constructed by both guides and visitors.

17th President of the United States

CARD IMAGE:

Andrew Johnson National Historic Site

This portrait show Andrew Johnson as a U.S. Senator from Tennessee. Painted in 1860 by Samuel Shaver, it probably would have been destroyed by the soldiers occupying the Johnson home without the quick thinking of Sarah Cutler, a Johnson neighbor. She wrapped it in newspaper and used it as a firescreen throughout the war.
