A Big Hole

Mammoth Cave National Park

#17104 Historic Entrance to Mammoth Cave

This Mammoth Natural Entrance was discovered in 1799 by a bear hunter named Houchins while tacking a wounded bear into the cave. Indians used reed torches for light as they used this deep dark entrance in the early days. This entrance has been a showplace since 1816.
