April Showers = May Grass

CARD IMAGE:

CG Ukiyo-e Series "Rekishi Kaido 21 Scenes"

21. Site of Meriken Wharf, the Port of Kobe, Kobe, Hyogo

The main route of the Rekishi Kaido, literally the "Highway of History," is an approx. 300km-long theme road. It starts from ancient Ise, following Auska, Nara, Kyoto and Osaka, and end in modern Kobe, going around to 21 epoch-making sites of Japanese history chronologically. The CG Ukiyo-e Series "Rekishi Kaido 21 Scenes" corresponds to all these locations.

Dear Ed,

A postcard on the occasion of it finally being green enough around here to cut the grass -- something I resist when I can.

CARD IMAGE:

Living Room. Taliesin® is the Spring Green, Wisconsin home of architect Frank Lloyd Wright®. Within the 37,000 square feet of Taliesin is the living room, which has been described as the greatest domestic space in America.

Dear Mr. Swinny,

I was delighted to read about you in the Express-News recently -- my mother sent me a clipping. You may not remember me, but I was a student of yours 32 years ago at AHHS in an English class. These days I live in northeastern Illinois, am a journalist and have two daughters, 5 and 10 years of age.

Among my English teachers, you and the late Mrs. Tibbets were favorites of mine.

Saturn

CARD IMAGE:

The Solar System

Saturn's Aurora

Saturn's auroral displays are caused by an energetic wind from the Sun that sweeps over the planet, much like Earth's aurora or the phenomenon that causes fluorescent lamps to glow. Unlike the Earth's aurora, which is occasionally seen in the nighttime sky, Saturn's aurora is seen only in ultraviolet light that is invisible from the Earth's surface; hence it can be observed only from space.

No Planet for Old Men

CARD IMAGE:

The Solar System

Venus

Earth and Venus formed from the same general region of the solar nebula, suggesting that their compositions are basically similar. They are roughly the same size, mass, and density. But whereas Earth has temperatures and conditions conductive to life, a variety of environments, and a robust magnetic field, Venus is a dry, hellish, high-pressure furnace whose magnetic field is not even strong enough to keep solar wind from stripping away the upper atmosphere.

Courtesy of NASA/JPL

Dear Layne,

I am out of Gerald Ford Museum postcards obtained in Grand Rapids recently, so Venus will have to do. GR is not a dry, hellish, high-pressure furnace, fortunately.

High-Altitude Methane Ice Crystal Clouds

CARD IMAGE:

The Solar System

Clouds on Neptune

The farthest of the planets known as gas giants, Neptune is four times Earth's diameter. Absorption of red light by methane in Neptune's atmosphere contributes to the planet's distinctive aqua color; the clouds themselves are somewhat blue. The pink features are high-altitude methane ice crystal clouds. Although the clouds appear white in visible light, they are tinted pink here because they were imaged at near-infrared wavelengths.
